Be Winter Ready
Be Winter Ready! We hope you will find the enclosed booklet helpful in preparing yourself for a winter event. In particular, it would be beneficial to be prepared and follow these suggested guidelines:
Those parishioners requiring special assistance should register with UK Power Networks and Anglian Water for priority response.
Please note that when there is a power failure, many telephones and “Lifeline” devices don’t work so it would be helpful to have an analogue phone on standby.
Remember to be neighbourly — check up on neighbours, offer to help with prescriptions and shopping etc.
Have a “grab bag” ready containing useful items in case of power cut such as torch with spare batteries, battery operated radio, analogue phone, emergency numbers, long-life food items and important documents.
Check your heating — your home should be heated to at least 18 degrees Celsius.
Your car — top up screen wash, check your tyres and think about a winter kit for your car.
Think about what may be impacted by strong winds or floods — in your garden or on your house.
Check your pipes are insulated and know where your stop tap is.
Consider how you would access vital information — print out important documents.
Freeze food such as meals, bread and milk

Norfolk County Council publishes Healthy Ageing Toolkit
Norfolk County Council has produced a Healthy Ageing Toolkit to support older people to stay safe and well at home this winter:www.norfolk.gov.uk/healthyageingtoolkit
The Healthy Ageing toolkit is designed for anybody who is supporting older people in the community, including families, carers and older people themselves. The toolkit outlines key information about how to:
- Proactively recognise people living with frailty and/or dementia at an early stage
- Signpost older people to information and advice about these conditions and healthy ageing in general
- Work together to link older people, especially those with frailty and/or dementia, into local services that can help them to enjoy the best possible quality of life and remain safe and well at home
The toolkit was developed in collaboration with members of the Norfolk and Waveney Healthy Ageing Steering Group.
The Healthy Ageing Toolkit forms part of NHS and Public Health England’s Help Us Help You Stay Well This Winter campaign.
Healthy Ageing – we need your support!
We need your support to promote the Healthy Ageing Toolkit. You can do this by using the following message.
Cold weather can be tough for everybody, but it’s especially hard for people aged 65 and over. This winter, Norfolk County Council has worked with NHS, District Councils and Third Sector colleagues to produce a healthy ageing toolkit. This toolkit sets out some practical ways that we can all work together to enable older people to stay safe and well at home this winter.

You can really help us by
1. Thinking about how you can use the toolkit to enable older people in your local community to stay safe and well at home this winter.
2. Sharing the toolkit with your friends and colleagues who are connecting with older people in the community.
New ways of working
Healthy Ageing is part of Norfolk County Council’s Promoting Independence strategy and sits alongside the Living Well approach.
ASSD’s vision is ‘Supporting people to be independent, resilient and well’.
To achieve this vision, we have a strategy – Promoting Independence – which is shaped by the Care Act with its call to action across public services to prevent, reduce and delay the demand for social care. It is also a positive response towards managing what is a difficult financial climate for public services.
The strategy has three main elements: Prevention and early help; Staying independent for longer and Living with complex needs.
The Living Well approach
A key project within Promoting Independence is Living Well – a new strengths-based approach to social work which focuses on what people can do, rather than what they can’t do. It is an approach based on collaboration with people, their families and carers. It builds on the Council’s‘Caring for our County: A vision for Norfolk in 2021’and aligns with other developments across the Council to take a locality and community based approach.
Just a reminder from the NHS in Norfolk and Waveney about how to help us help you this winter.
All of us should be making sure our medicine cabinets are stocked. It’s also sensible to order any regular medicines you need in good time so you don’t run out, taking care to only order what you need.
But if you do feel poorly, seek advice from your local pharmacist before it gets worse.
If it’s urgent, then a call to your GP or NHS111 is the next step, and they’ll advise you what to do.

HomeFirst – your bed is the best bed!
None of us want to go into hospital or a care bed, but if we do it’s good to get home if we can. The NHS and social care across all of Norfolk and Waveney are stressing that if someone needs a hospital or temporary care bed they will get one, but our aim is always to help people get back home as soon as possible. This is because older people in particular can lose independence rapidly. Being back home can also help a speedier recovery. So if you know a friend or relative, particularly if they are older, who has to go into hospital it would be kind to make sure they have all they need to get back home, including checking the heating works and they will have food in the house, the washing is done and they feel OK.
New Year, New You
With the start of a New Year people’s thoughts turn to getting fit and improving their health. To stay healthy or improve health, adults need to do two types of physical activity each week: aerobic and strength exercises.
How much physical activity you need to do each week depends on your age. Adults aged 65 or older who are generally fit and have no health conditions that limit their mobility should try to be active daily by doing at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity such as cycling or walking, and strength exercises on two or more days a week.
Why not join a local walking group, go for a swim or join a local class, your library should have information about groups near you.
